Vignettes for the Czech Republic

A vignette serves as proof that the driver has paid the appropriate fees to use the highways and motorways of a particular country. They are very popular in many European countries, especially Austria and the Czech Republic.

In 2021, the Czech Republic authorities decided to remove the traditional vignette in the form of a sticker and replace it entirely with a digital one. Since then, every driver who needs a Czech Republic electronic vignette may apply for the toll online.

The online application process is very convenient and straightforward. To obtain the digital toll sticker, you must provide information on your vehicle (license plate number) and details about your planned travel (date of entering the Czech Republic, duration of the trip). Once you select a suitable vignette and cover the fee payment, the permit will be processed.

Who needs to obtain a vignette to use the Czech roads?

It is mandatory for all drivers of at least four-wheels vehicles under 3.5t to purchase an appropriate vignette for the Czech Republic. No additional vignette is required for motorbikes or trailers.

If you are a driver of a vehicle that weighs over 3.5t, such as a van or a camper, you do not apply for the e-vignette. Instead, you should purchase an electronic device with GPS that measures the distance driven through the territory of the Czech Republic. The final toll that should be paid for the travel depends on the calculated distance and the vehicle category.

You should remember that there is no need to obtain a vignette if you are driving an electric, hydrogen, or hybrid car (the CO2 emissions cannot exceed 50g/km). All you need to do is register the number on your license plate before the journey.

Czech Republic vignette types

The e-vignette must be used for all at least four-wheel vehicles up to 3.5 t. Vehicles over 3.5 t should use the online toll system (MYTO CZ), which requires buying a special device with a GPS locator.

The Czech Republic does not have special road sections where the additional toll would be charged (unlike in Austria).

Vehicles up to 3.5t

There are three types of e-vignette that drivers may choose between:

  • an e-vignette for 10 days
  • an e-vignette for 30 days
  • an e-vignette for 1 year

Vehicles over 3.5t

A driver whose vehicle exceeds 3.5 t must register via the MYTO CZ online toll system and install a special electronic device (OBU) equipped with a GPS locator in the vehicle. The device specifies the location of the vehicle and counts the mileage to estimate the toll to be paid.

The Czech Republic e-vignette types

Currently, vehicles eligible for the digital vignette to the Czech Republic include cars weighing up to 3.5t. Moreover, you should remember that contrary to other European countries, there are no expressways and motorways in the Czech Republic that require additional tolls.

Vehicles under 3.5t

Before leaving for a journey abroad, drivers of four-wheel vehicles that weigh up to 3.5t must first obtain a suitable e-vignette. The digital sticker may be purchased online and is available in three types:

  • One-year e-vignette
  • 30-days e-vignette
  • 10-days e-vignette

Depending on the length of your planned journey, you should choose an appropriate permit. The annual vignette grants the longest validity period. Once you have a valid e-vignette, you may travel across the Czech Republic without worrying about getting a fine.

Vehicles over 3.5t

Vehicles that exceed 3.5t must be registered in an online toll system called MYTO. Prior to the journey, the driver should obtain a special device with a GPS to measure the distance driven in the Czech Republic. Then, the device will automatically calculate the amount of money that should be paid for the kilometers traveled.

Vignette control and penalties

The vignette checks are carried out randomly, using patrol vehicles with specialized cameras that recognize the license plate numbers. The control authorities (Police and the Customs Administration of the Czech Republic) may check your vehicle for a valid vignette at MOP stations, car parks, or with the use of a remote connection.

You may be given a financial penalty if you fail to obtain a relevant vignette (standard or e-vignette) before your travel. The fine can cost you up to 20,000 CZK.

Benefits of the Czech Republic e-Vignette

  • The online registration for the electronic vignette is straightforward and convenient, allowing you to register for the permit from the comfort of your home.
  • Depending on the length of your journey, you may choose between a vignette valid for 10 days or 30 days; for longer travels, you may obtain an annual vignette.
